Behavior Consultation
What is Behavior Consultation?
Behavior Consultation is a data-driven individualized assessment and intervention service targeted at addressing challenging behavior(s) that a person is exhibiting. The goal of Behavior Consultation, like all of SKILLS' services, is to foster greater independence and more success in day-to-day living. Built on the premise that behavior is communication, individuals with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities may struggle to communicate verbally and/or struggle understanding how to relate to others. We may see discomfort, anxiety, fear, stress exhibited as coping mechanisms in the form of elopement, self-injurious behavior, physical aggression, or in other ways that may be socially inappropriate or dangerous for that individual. This can at times seriously inhibit an individual from living life to their fullest potential.
A licensed professional will help that individual, their family and/or care team to better understand the function of the identified behavior(s) and create a plan of support moving forward. Through education, training, and ongoing monitoring all in accordance with state regulations, staff helps the individual reduce problematic behaviors and improve their quality of life.
All services are trauma-informed, always positive, and provided by a clinician who's worked in the field for 20 years.
What are the steps involved?
Behavior Consultation includes the following steps in conjunction with the provider, the individual, any care team that it's appropriate to involve, and the family if applicable.
1. Assessment
2. Positive Behavior Support Plan
3. Direct Observation
4. Monitoring (could be remote or onsite)
5. Plan Presentation and Training
6. Ongoing Remote Monitoring & Continued Observation
