Residential Supports that equal Personal Supports
Residential Supports
We know that adults want to be independent. That’s why SKILLS provides residential supports for adults with intellectual disabilities. With homes all over central Maine, we help adults stay in the communities they grew up in. Direct Support Professionals work in homes 24 hours a day to support residents and keep them safe. Residents can attend community support programs, get career support, and have transportation to activities or appointments.
Residential Supports are Personal Supports
The goal of residential supports is to help keep adults with intellectual disabilities safe and healthy. At the same time, we want to encourage them to be as independent as possible. By offering a range of support levels, SKILLS, Inc. does just that.
PNMI’s
PNMI’s (Private Non-Medical Institutes) are licensed boarding homes. Between six and 15 adults live in each home. Each person has a private bedroom or a bedroom shared with one roommate. All share the bathrooms, kitchen, dining room and living room. Most of these homes have DSP’s on-site 24 hour a day.
Waiver Homes
Waiver homes are tailored specifically to meet the unique needs of the individuals living in them. So every waiver home is different.
The individuals have their own rooms and share kitchens, bathrooms and living areas.
DSP’s help keep residents safe and encourage them to meet their personal goals. Residents may choose individualized activities in their home or they may attend community support programs. The hours of staff support depend on the needs of the residents.
In-Home Support
Some adults can live in their own homes or apartments with support from DSP’s. They receive from 2 to 35 hours of support per week to help them stay independent and successful. DSP’s can assist with budgeting, medical appointments, grocery shopping and home maintenance. They also encourage people to stay active in their communities and attend community support programs.
